MC was one of the most original and dynamic brothers I had met in some time. Always “cutting edge”. Always with an idea or scheme or asking me if I had heard this or that kinda conspiratorial theory.
During his time at Bloomsburg, Mike and I did a good bit of talking about bitcoin and other ways to “stick it to the government”. He was one of the few folks at that time who even knew what bitcoin was. Had he bought a bunch back then, I think he would have been Delta Pi’s first crypto millionaire.
Mike finished with Bloomsburg and headed west. I don’t think that happened immediately, but maybe one of his closer friends will provide some detail in the comments. He settled in Vail, CO and he lived out of his van. We shared a passion for “van life” too, but his commitment to the idea far outperformed mine. He had a woodburner in his van, and he told me he burned pallet wood for heat. He apparently worked in restaurants mostly during this time, and he made friends with a great bunch of folks who I got to know better after Mike’s passing.
Always interesting and provocative, Mike sent me what he called an “illegal book” about human development that centered on primitive man eating the brains of other primitive men they vanquished in battle. It was wild stuff, and although widely discounted by science…those concepts still jump into my brain from time to time.
You will be missed, my counterculture friend. Peace to you and your family.

On April 6th Jeanne and Ed Calabrese suffered a loss greater than any parent should know. Their beloved sons, Joe and Mike, passed away suddenly in a boating accident. The outpouring of love and support from the community has been incredible and appreciated. Many people have reached out to ask how they can help the family during this impossibly difficult time.
